Last weekend we took a drive up to Tarpon Springs for an afternoon. It’s about a 45 minute ride from Tampa. We walked around and looked at the shops, ate lunch at Dimitri’s on the water, and had dessert at Hella’s Bakery.
Tarpon Springs has the highest percentage of Greek Americans of any city in the US due to the sponge industry that was booming there in the early 1900s. The sponge docks in Tarpon still have sponging boats docked in the harbor, lots of little shops, amazing Greek restaurants, and boat tours. Seriously the food there is reason enough to visit.
I highly recommend taking a day trip if you’re local to Tampa/St. Pete. Try to get a table on the water at Dimitri’s for lunch or dinner, that’s our fave!
