Now that I am finally out of college residence halls and living in my own apartment one of the first things on my to do list after moving in was to get a dog. In high school my family got two puppies (not at the same time) and I watched my mom potty train them, socialize them, and teach them discipline so I knew what I was getting myself into. I had done so much research about different breeds and I really had my heart set on getting a mini golden doodle, but I just could not justify paying more than my rent on a puppy from a breeder. So then I began applying for dogs on different rescue websites where I reached a lot of dead ends.
After starting to feel like I had exhausted all of my resources, a friend sent me an invite to a Facebook event for a dog adoption event nearby that was being hosted by the Hillsborough County Humane Society at a local doggie boutique. So the morning of the event Zachary and I woke up early so that we would be one of the first people there because we didn’t want to miss out! When we arrived there was this little cream colored dog in the pen that was so bouncy and excited. I knew he was the one! The volunteers at the event told us that he had been given the name “Chopper” (we still do not know why) and that he had been brought to the Humane Society a few days prior and just became available for adoption. I decided to put him on hold, which meant no one else could adopt him for a set amount of time, and then Zachary and I left to talk it over. Next thing I know we are on the phone with the Humane Society asking how soon I could bring him home.
Now, I have had Jax for a month and I have loved getting to know his personality! He was really easy to transition into my home and he ended up being potty trained already which was such a bonus! I found that he had been trained to sit on command and he sleeps through the night in my bed. I do not know his background at all, while at first I was really interested in knowing about it, I have decided that it is fine if I never find out.
Jax is such a ham, as Zachary calls him, he loves to entertain and receive attention. He is definitely spoiled with toys which he proudly prances around the apartment carrying. I was very hesitant to bring him around other dogs at first because I had no idea how he would react. The first encounter he had was at a dog park where a bigger dog pinned him to the ground while all fourteen pounds of Jax tried to fight back. Thankfully Zachary was with me and he was brave enough to get in the middle to remove Jax from the situation. After that I was extremely nervous to bring Jax back to the dog park and wanted to make sure it would be a positive experience the next time. I took him to Davis Island dog park and there was a lovely women there with a Boston Terrier who was kind enough to let us introduce Jax to her dog to see how they would play. It ended up going very well and I even felt comfortable enough bringing Jax into the dog beach area with the bigger dogs and I was delighted to find that he not only loves to play, but also loves the water!
I already feel like I have had him for much longer than a month and his snuggles never get old. I also take way too many photos of him which you can see on my Instragram or his (@_captainjax). I may be partial, but I think he is the cutest ragamuffin there ever was!
P.S. I am going to start doing more posts about life so there will be a healthy mix of outfits and other things going forward. I would love to know what post ideas you may have! Leave your suggestions in the comments below.

Jax has definitely just stolen my heart. What a sweetheart! A ragamuffin is definitely the best way to describe him! I have a labradoodle called Coco and I know what you mean about the expense – doodle breeds always seem to come with a crazy price tag.
I’m so happy you’ve found such a darling to keep you company. x
